Samsung has taken big design steps to make the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 a revolutionary foldable device. In some ways, the hinge and display updates have been among the most important from the start.
It’s been three years since the first Samsung Galaxy Fold hit the market. Foldable devices were exciting, even groundbreaking, but they also had serious flaws.
Samsung quickly found a foothold with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2. This introduces a large screen on the outside, a large foldable screen covered in ultra-thin glass that won’t peel off, and a redesigned hinge that literally wipes away the dirt to hold the intricate mechanism and it works smoothly.
Last year’s Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 got even better hinges, upgraded materials for better durability, and carried over the phone setup from the Galaxy S21.
The Galaxy Z Fold 4 offers mostly subtle but significant design improvements, folding and cover-up screens, a camera, and the now-iconic hinge. As a result, the Galaxy device looks like any other flagship smartphone, but hides some amazing features that make it incredibly powerful, fun, and productive.
I’ve had nearly every tested and used Galaxy Fold and Z Fold, but none feel like a “regular” phone like this one. Obviously, the screen is a bit narrower than, say, the 6.8-inch Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, and the device as a whole is thicker than almost any standard smartphone on the market when folded. We managed to increase the display by 2.7mm by shrinking the bezel and hinge profile. In essence, the external screen is a no-compromise, adaptive 120Hz smartphone display. On the back of the is a complete S22 class camera array. It’s a bit disappointing that the Samsung smartphone in this price range doesn’t have the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra camera package that offers 10x optical zoom and 100x space zoom, but these moderately good lenses satisfy most consumers.
The 7.6-inch foldable, tablet-sized display is attractive and useful, but it has a distinct crease. You can’t bend the display without a small dimple in the center that you can see and feel, but like the recent Z-Fold editions, the crease quickly disappears into the background when you use the screen.
For Samsung Fold Fans I hope you remember the early folds and the weird, ragged bezels that seem to struggle to hold the flexible screen in place. The Galaxy Z Fold 4, on the other hand, offers few visual cues that it’s not your typical tablet display (apart from the crease). Samsung has hidden the selfie camera under the display. When you turn on the camera and flip the view, you’ll suddenly see a lens opening with tiny squiggly lines of white LED light around it.
We pay more for the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 because it’s the most versatile mobile device on the market today. Sufficiently thin and light (0.8 grams lighter) Looks, feels and has an external screen large enough to function like a traditional flagship, with great multitasking capabilities and a vast expanse with an S Pen and blends elegantly into a gorgeous 7.6-inch tablet. included) input makes it a whole other thing.
Pros
+Bigger outside screen
+Improved multitasking
+Hidden selfie camera in the big screen
Cons
-It really should have the S22 Ultra’s cameras
-Crease is still noticeable
-It has a high price
Early Verdict
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 is a foldable phone that looks more like a ‘regular’ flagship than ever before. It’s thinner, lighter, and has a larger lens cover so you can almost forget about the large foldable interior. The camera array is excellent for his S22’s quality, but at this price point, you can get the S22’s ultra-level lenses and camera quality
